Any PG medical admissions (MD/MS/DNB/PG Diploma) made after February 28, 2026will be treated as invalidby the NMC. This announcement brings complete closure to the admission process for the current academic session.
NEET PG Counselling: How the Process Works
NEET PG is India’s single largest entrance exam for postgraduate medical seats. After the results are declared, counselling happens in structured rounds managed by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for All India Quota seats and by respective State Counselling Authorities for the remaining seats.
The standard rounds are:
- Round 1
- Round 2
- Mop up Round
- Stray Vacancy Round
The Stray Vacancy Round is specifically designed to fill any leftover seats after all previous rounds. For NEET PG 2025, this round’s reporting deadline was February 28, 2026. In some previous years, authorities occasionally allowed an “extra” or Special Stray Roundwhen a large number of seats remained vacant. Many candidates and colleges had hoped for the same this year.
What the Official NMC Notice Says
In its recent communication (dated April 1-2, 2026), the PGMEB clearly stated:
“No Special Stray Vacancy Round shall be conducted for NEET-PG 2025. The matter has attained finality in view of the dismissal of related Supreme Court petitions… no admission made beyond the stipulated last date, i.e. 28 February 2026 shall be considered valid.”
The NMC has also directed all State Governments, UT Administrations, medical colleges, and counselling authorities to strictly follow the prescribed timeline. Any admission granted after the deadline will be treated as unauthorised and liable for cancellation.
This decision aligns with the counselling schedule ratified by the Hon’ble Supreme Court on March 23, 2026, and emphasises uniformity across the country.
Why NMC Took This Firm Stand
The regulator’s primary goal is to protect the quality and timeline of postgraduate medical education. Late admissions often result in:
- Students missing important foundational classes
- Disruption in the academic calendar
- Inconsistency in training standards across colleges
By closing the process on time, NMC ensures that the 2025-26 postgraduate batch starts together and completes the course without unnecessary delays.
What This Means for You
If you have already secured a seat:
Your admission is now final and secure. Focus on joining your college, completing formalities, and beginning your specialisation.
If you are still waiting for a seat:
Unfortunately, the counselling window for NEET PG 2025-26 is now officially closed. No further rounds (special or otherwise) will be held at national or state level.
For medical colleges and institutes:
No new admissions can be granted after February 28, 2026. Any violation may lead to regulatory action.

Final Thoughts
The NMC’s decision, though disappointing for some candidates hoping for one last chance, brings much needed clarity and discipline to the admission process. It ensures that medical education maintains high standards and timely completion of training. To every NEET PG 2025 aspirant reading this: your hard work and dedication are truly commendable. Medicine is a marathon, not a sprint. Many successful doctors faced initial setbacks before achieving their goals.
