Student Found Dead in Hostel Room
A 25 year old medical student pursuing his MBBS degree at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College in Indore was found dead in his hostel room on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Antariksh Agrawal, a first year MBBS student of the 2025 batch and a resident of Gwalior. According to available information, he was found hanging from the ceiling fan in room number 43 on the fourth floor of Block B of the boys hostel, and the body was sent for post mortem examination.
Incident Discovery and Initial Response
The incident came to light in the evening when Antariksh’s roommate returned to the hostel and knocked on the door but received no response. Other students were alerted, and suspecting something unusual, they broke open the door and found him hanging inside the room. Local authorities were informed and standard legal procedures were initiated. It was also reported that Antariksh did not attend classes on Monday, and an investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Mental Health Concerns in Medical Education
The death of a young medical student once again highlights the mental health challenges faced by medical college students in India. Long academic hours, intense competition, fear of failure, frequent examinations, lack of emotional support, and difficulties adjusting to hostel life can place significant psychological stress on students, especially during the first year. Despite increasing awareness, mental health support systems in many institutions remain inadequate or underutilized, underscoring the need for accessible counseling services, early identification of distress, peer support, and a more supportive academic environment.
